Staff report worsening conditions incamps as the number of displaced swells. Separated children need someone to look afterthem and feed them," says Nalee. "For mothers such as the one we encountered, often all they can do is wait and hope for word that their children are safe."LWR partners are providing counseling in the camps to help families cope withincreasingly traumatic living conditions. However the most painful thing for mostpeople is being separated from their families," says K. Thampu(Nalee), LWR'sActing Country Program Manager for Sri Lanka. At the food distribution, staff encountered children who had been separatedfrom their families and had come to beg for food. While touring campfacilities, staff encountered a mother whose baby was accidentally left behindwhen she and her family fled an attack."In the chaos of running for your life, it is easy for children to becomeseparated from their parents. While there, staff encountered thousands of hungry people, children separatedfrom their parents, disease and death."The situation at the camps is distressing with cramped living spaces, shortfood supplies, and limited water. On May 2, LWR staff members, along with local partners, delivered foodpackages to people living in a safe zone camp in Vavuniya, a governmentcontrolled city approximately 40 km (approximately 25 miles) from the frontline of violence An estimated 194,000 people have taken refuge in Vavuniya.
BALTIMORE, May 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As violence continues to escalatein Sri Lanka, Lutheran World Relief (LWR) staff on the ground report hunger, separation and tragedy for thousands of civilians caught in the middle of thefighting.More than 1,000 people were killed and 1,300 more were injured on Sunday whena government sponsored safe zone was attacked, highlighting the extremelyvolatile nature of the ongoing conflict between the Sri Lankan government andthe Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). With Canada's GDP expected to rebound in 2010 to 2.9% the long-term outlookoffers some positivity even if the short-term appears quite bleak. Moving to the mass grocery retail sector, the situation is slightly differentwith many retailers posting positive financial results. Canada's leadingsupermarket chain Empire announced that during Q308 net earnings increased 26.5%to CAD61.5mn (US$47.6mn), whilst Canadian retailer Metro Inc reported anincrease in net earnings of 9.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) to CAD81.1mn (US$65.9mn)for Q109. In light of the economic downturn, there islikely to be an increased demand for such products thus providing an opportunityfor Cott Corp to reverse its fortunes.
In addition to the general economic conditions,it is thought that Cott Corp's poor performance is likely to stem from a problemwith its strategy and therefore the company needs to refocus its efforts onproducing private label soft drinks. Although some food and drink companies have posted positive results thisquarter, in general earnings have suffered. Canada's largest dairy processingcompany Saputo announced this quarter that, in the nine months to December 312008, its earnings fell to CAD57.8mn (US$47.1mn). Canadian soft drinksmanufacturer, Cott Corp, and Canadian based brewer, Molson Coors, have alsoreported a drop in earnings, with the former announcing a loss of CAD152.8mn(US$124mn) for FY08 and the latter a drop in earnings of 22% to CAD416.4mn(US$338mn) for the same period. We forecast a real GDPcontraction of 1.4% for 2009 and, as a result, many companies are cautious ofcommitting to heavy investments during this period of economic uncertainty. Asthe recession deepens consumers are also feeling the pinch and many have turnedaway from premium products, as discussed in this newly published Canada Food andDrink Report Q2009.
